Susan's son in "The Review"

EAST LIVERPOOL — Rob McCoy recently became only the fourth player in East Liverpool Christian School history to eclipse the 1,500 point mark.

It didn’t come easy though.

“He needed 17 points going into the last game,” ELCS boys basketball coach Dave Goodman said. “He got it in only three quarters because he took a hard hit, bloodied the floor and the paramedics had to take a look at him.”

That is probably one of the reasons why Goodman admires the determination of McCoy, who finished his career with 1,503 points.

“He’s got a big heart. A lot bigger heart than body.”

McCoy’s speed also contributed to his consistent scoring.

“He’s one of the quickest I’ve seen here in my 15 years,” Goodman said.

According to McCoy, his game has developed since his freshman year.

“I guess I know when to take over a game and make plays. I don’t hog the ball and I always keep teams honest, but I know when my team needs me,” he said.

As McCoy scored his milestone points, he heard recognition from the crowd.

“All the fans started cheering and that meant a lot,” McCoy said. “My mom and dad were there and it was really exciting, but they didn’t stop play so I had to keep going.”

McCoy is glad to have his name mentioned among past ELCS standouts.

“We’ve had so many great players. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment. I’ve always wanted to be known for basketball. I had lots of fun doing it and I was blessed to go to this Christian school.”
